Back in 2019, when here Kyoto first opened its doors near Karasuma Oike, it immediately established a distinct presence. Housed in a former mortar-heavy space with warm wood accents and Hiroshima dining chairs, it was designed with a generous layout that felt entirely unhurried. In the early days, it became a reliable anchor—a place to set down a laptop, order a impeccably poured cafe latte, and work undisturbed for hours.
The coffee program, helmed with world-class precision, pairs seamlessly with their signature pastry: a meticulously crafted canelé with a caramelized, crunchy exterior and a soft, custard-like center. The pairing of rich espresso with the crisp texture of the pastry creates a ritual that feels elevated yet completely unpretentious.
Even as the city changes around it, the space retains its effortless cool. The open facade lets the city breeze filter through on warmer days, offering a spacious, functional sanctuary for those who appreciate design as much as a serious brew.

05 / THE THOUGHT - The long threshold of late summere
Summer here is not a brief affair; it is a season of endurance that stretches lazily from June through the end of September. The heavy humidity and relentless heat narrow the scope of daily life. Long exploratory photography walks give way to air-conditioned retreats, moving swiftly from one climate-controlled space to another, keeping the camera tucked away until the air thins out.
There is a specific kind of anticipation that builds during these final weeks. You find yourself waiting for that first crisp morning, the signal that it is finally time to grab a camera, lace up a pair of comfortable shoes, and spend hours getting lost through unfamiliar alleyways and new coffee stands without checking the thermometer.
This quiet waiting period has its own value. It forces a pause, encouraging planning, refining ideas, and slowing down the creative rhythm before the surge of autumn energy arrives. The walks will return soon enough; for now, we wait for the temperature to break.
